TONY AND I were not alone in the bunker. The Hawk was there and heâd brought some people with him. A few boys Iâd never met and two girls, eyes bright, lips wet with the alcohol that had been his treat.
We crowded on rock shelf down by the water. One of the girls was sitting right at the edge and the Hawk was sitting close to her, arm around her waist. She didnât brush his arm off, but I could tell she didnât like it, and was only allowing it so heâd keep sharing his bottle with her. He pressed his body to hers, pretending the rest of us were doing the pushing and his arm was all that was keeping her from tumbling over the edge, down into the water.
Tony sat across from them, the other girl beside him, and the Hawk kept stealing glances at the pair. I knew what he was thinking; she was his gift to Tony. The girl by Tonyâs side had the longest black eyelashes, the palest throat, and the reddest lips. She set her bottle on the rock and leaned into Tony, whispering something. He didnât reply, but I saw his mouth twitch. The Hawk noticed it too and winked theatrically, eager for contact and consensus from Tony.
Tony was indifferent to him.
He only had eyes for me.
I was squished between two strange boys, their heat, sweat and movements, but Tonyâs gaze was what was making my heart pound.
The girl beside him put her hand on his knee and ran her fingers along the seam of his jeans. The other hand found its way behind his back, up under his shirt. My eyes were fixed on his. In my peripheral vision, I saw her hands, how they were glued to him. It grossed me out. I wanted to rush over and shove her out of the way, tear away her sticky gaze and fingers. When I looked at Tonyâs face, I thought I noticed discomfort creeping under his skin, never mind the smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He allowed her hand to make its way along his waist, he let her put her lips to his ear, but before she managed to say anything he got up. For a second her arm hung in midair, her hand pale and limp on the rock. Then it found the bottle in front of her, and she turned to one of the other boys.
Tony went to the cement door. The Hawk watched him go. He opened his mouth to speak, but then his girl bent over him, reaching for the bottle heâd placed out of reach and a wide gap opened up between her tank top and jeans, the stretch of white skin commanded the Hawkâs full attention.
Tony expected me to follow him. I could tell by his movements, a sort of resoluteness Iâd learned to recognize. When I caught up with him, he was standing in the bunker with his back to me, next to the armchair.
